How can you pay at the pump when your 5 digit zip does not work and there is no capacity to put in the extra 4 digits that we now have?

As a Canadian that travels to the US a lot I am very annoyed at the fact I can no longer pay at the pump using a credit card. I have tried entering a few zipcodes but I am always declined and have to pay inside. This means I can no longer get gas after hours as well. It may prevent fraud but they should have an exception for international credit cards, or at least allow postal codes.

I put in random zip codes (including invalid ones) when I swipe my credit card, and it has always gone through without any fuss.

So if it is for fraud detection, it isn't very good, but it sure is annoying when I'm pressing the handle and nothing is happening.

The zip code is a way of preventing fraud. Yes, if your card is stolen, you most likely will not have any financial losses, but the business where the transactions took place sure will. The card company will simply charge the marchant back. This happens often with pay at the pump transactions where a customer's identity can not be confirmed and anyone can use anyone else's card. The company is just trying to cut back on thier losses when fraud happens. I would think that if your card was stolen, you would prefer the person who stole it was unable to use it, regardless of it not costing YOU anything. it may be 4 seconds of inconvenience to you, but it saves the merchant thousands in fraudulent transactions, which helps keep costs down, and hopefully discourages stole card transactions.

.Welcome to the new Police State where you eventually won't be able to buy anything without first entering the number of your National ID Card or waving your injected chip in front of the scanner.

: D - LOL!! I TOTALLY hear you Shaun!!! [Found your post by Googling "SuperAmerica Asking Zip Codes"..] I am in a suburb of Minneapolis and it is colder than a witches "nanner" here right now. Damn machine asked me that same thing .. at which point I muttered a very indignant "I am standing here freezing my privates off and you are asking me for WHAT??"

So, I put in my standard reply when someone/a company I don't know asks me for something silly like a zip .. 02134 .. from the old children's show "Zoom" out of Boston. Wrong answer apparently as it asked me to go see the cashier. I muttered a very unlady-like "F**k You." and drove off to my local BP instead .. where it turned out the gas was $.07 cheaper!

I could also go on about my experience with AT&T txt spam and the fact there is nothing AT&T will do about it .. but instead I am gonna run out to my local Verizon store and port my cell number to them!

Great read Shaun .. thank you!!
